4. Pilam and a sorority did a skit that preceded Bob Hope at the 1976 Gator Growl. What was the name of the sorority and what was the name of the skit? The sorority was Delta Phi Epsilon and the name of the skit was "The Wizard of Rube". It poked fun at Governor Askew and, especially, at Coach Dickey.
5. What UF football coach has the next best winning percentage after Spurrier? G.E. Pyle, who started coaching UF in 1909, went 26-7-3. Pyle took UF to their first post season games, a pair of holiday exhibitions in Havana. Florida won game one, but in the second game, Pyle pulled his team off the field in protest of one officials officiating. The Cuban police said that forfeiting a game in front of paying customers was against the law, so they arrested Pyle. After entering a plea at the station house, he gathered his players and set sail back to the U.S. one hour before the trial was to begin. The 1912 Gators are fugitives in Cuba to this day.
6. What is considered the greatest upset victory in UF football history? UF beat Alabama in 1923 by a score of 16-6. The game was played in extremely wet and muddy conditions. Coach Fleet instructed the Gators to take off their waterlogged socks at halftime. Alabama could no longer keep up with the suddenly speedy Gators. UF overcame a 6-0 halftime deficit to win 16-6.
7. What is considered Pilam's greatest comeback victory in intramural football in the 1980s? In 1984, TEP took a 20 - 0 lead over Pilam. Pilam came back to win the game 21-20.
8. In 1987, this highly touted freshman made his debut against what school? Emmitt Smith played his first game, late in the second half, at the Orange Bowl against UM. UF lost big that day, but Emmitt, in his few carries, played fantastic. The next week he started for UF against Kentucky. That was the game when the Emmitt Smith era began.
9. This UF quarterback was a pre-season All-American in the 1980s. He also was on the cover of the September 13, 1982 Sports Illustrated He was thought to have a promising pro career and actually played some pro football. A few years later, he was back at UF finishing his education and was the starting quarterback for Beta Theta Pi. To make matters worse, his Beta Theta Pi team was beat soundly by a Pilam pledge class. Who was the UF/Beta Theta Pi quarterback and which Pilam Pledge Class won the game? PC '85 soundly defeated Wayne Peace and Beta Theta Pi. Pilam QB Hadley Englehard outplayed his counterpart. The game was in preparation for the '85 Nosebowl. Peace made the cover of SI after UF defeated UM. That was the game where James Jones made a famous touchdown catch down the sideline very late in the game.
