Facts About Florida Delta
Florida Delta of Pi Lambda Phi was founded in 1925 as the Delta Chapter of Phi Beta Delta, and in 1941 was merged with Pi Lambda Phi. At the present time there are 109 active brothers and pledges on the chapter rolls. Since its founding, Pi Lam has amassed an enviable record in its scholarship, extra-curricular, social, and athletic activities. During the past year, Pi Lam won its third consecutive Inter-fraternity Scholarship Trophy - a continuation of the Pi Lam tradition of being 1st in scholastics on campus for 24 out of 27 years. When the first semester grades for the year were released Pi lam was once again on top. Pi Lam showed its prowess in the field of athletics by winning first place in its league three times, and, in 1954, retiring the coveted President Miller Athletic Trophy. The year 1954 also saw Pi Lam the winner of the Intra-mural Sportsmanship Trophy and the year 1955 closed with Pi Lam still on top. Pi Lam finished the first semester of this year in fourth place in the Orange League. The Pi Lam Athletic Hall of Fame this year added more men to its already large membership; they were Harry Rosen, first place in ALL CAMPUS tennis; Allan Basch, first place in ALL CAMPUS shuffleboard; Sherman Corrin, a first place in Inter-mural track; Bob Raderman, Cliff Fried, and Ted Kretzchmar, ALL CAMPUS football. Joe Brodsky, ALL CAMPUS basketball, and Mike Segal, ALL CAMPUS volleyball. Seven Pi Lams lettered for their participation in University athletics; they were: "Joltin" Joe Brodsky, Gator fullback; Morris Mirkis, Dick Sernaker, and Herman Paul, swimming; Dave Friedman and Bert Pellman, tennis; and Dick Rohr, star freshman on the Gator basketball squad. The University intra-mural program is very ably administered by brother Irwin Swichkow, Student Director, with the help of brother Norman Landman, Table-tennis manager; brother Fred Vigotsky, Golf manager; and brother Max Hagen, Volleyball manager. Brother Swichkow was name best intra-mural official of 1955 and brother Hagen was runner up. Florida Delta of Pi Lambda Phi has, for many years, been synonymous with outstanding debaters. In 1950, brother Al Zalla was named to Florida Blue Key and the Hall of Fame for outstanding work in debate. Last year brother Bob Shevin received this honor, and this year it was brother Henry Forer for Hall of Fame and Florida Blue Key. Forer was recently elected to the post of Treasurer of Florida Blue Key and he is also serving as national president of Tau Kappa Alpha, honorary debate society. Brother Jim Kaufman is the past president of the local chapter of Tau Kappa Alpha. Pilams Joe Schwartz and Dick Masington, national high school debate champions for 1954, and Fred Berger and Harold Klapper, national high school debate champions for 1955, are now actively engaged in University Debating. The H. H. Hoplins Inter-mural Debate Trophy was retired this year by freshman Steve Feinstein and Jules Cohen. The University of Florida looks to Pi Lambda Phi for many of its campus leaders, men like Ed Heller, Secretary-Treasurer of his Freshamn class, Drum Major in the Gator Band, and Finance Chairman of the Florida Blue Key Speakers Bureau; Jim Kaufman, chairman of the Rebel party during fall elections and former Frosh Exec Council member; Irwin Swichkow, candidate for vice-president of the Junior Class in the fall elections; Joe Lewis, vice-president of the Interfraternity Council, and Allen Schiff, member of the Honor Court during the summer session. In the Spring election, it was a landslide victory for Pilam and the University Party. Brother Mike Segal was elected Editor of the 1957 Seminole (yearbook) and Dick Masington was elected to the sophomore executive council. Ed Heller was name secretary of finance. Campus publications have also felt the influence of Pi Lam leadership. Mike Segal is editor of the Seminole. Allen Schiff was State Editor of the Florida Alligator during the first semester and acted as Managing Editor last summer. Chuck Ruffner is the Circulation and Section Sales Manager for Advertising on the Alligator. Affilitate Steve Traiman is Intramural Editor of the Alligator, while brother Pete Mula is a staff writer. During the past year Pi Lam was, as usual, well represented in the University's various honor societies. The following men earned membership in the Freshman Honor Society (Phi Eta Sigma): Bernie Wideman, Norman Spitzer, Mike Gutman, Stuart Lubitz, Joe Warshaw, Alan Basch, Henry Forer, Mike Segal (Sec.), Alan Schiff, Dick Masington, Jay Shames, Harvey Rifkin, Leonard Rabin, Joe Schwartz, Mel Taylor, Fred Berger, and Jules Cohen. The following men were elected to membership in pre-professional honor societies: Stan Cohn, to the American Society of Civil Engineers; Mike Gutman, Charles Glicksburg, Norman Spitzer and Bob Salzman, to Pre-Med. Honor Society (Alpha Epsilon Delta); Henry Forer to Business Administration Honor Society, (Beta Gamma Sigma, President) and (Beta Alpha Psi, Treasurer); Howard Grossman, Stuart Lubitz, Alan Basch, and Marvin Glickstein to the Engineering Honor Society (Sigma Tau); Larry Marks to the Building Construction Honor Society (Sigma Lambda Delta); Ed Heller to the Music Honor Society (Kappa Kappa Psi, Teas.); Leonard Rabin and Ed Heller to the Agricultural Honor Societies (Alpha Zeta) and (Thyrsus). |
