Highlights:
The Pearl was dedicated to Leroy Tillman, to commemorate his 25th year with the fraternity. At the dinner honoring this anniversary, Leroy reminisced about his years with us. Pilam began the year having just retired The President's Cup, after winning it for three consecutive years. A rare feat in UF fraternity history and an overwhelming sign of athletic dominance. Nosebowl was played on November 18, 1979 at P.K. Yonge Field. Pilam had 50 pledges on game day. Pilam won the game 26 - 0. It was only the second shutout in Nosebowl history, and the first in 19 years. Pilam had previously shutout Tep in 1960. The 26 point spread also represented the biggest victory in the history of the game. A record that still stands to this day. Pilam was lead by Head Coach Andy Bernstein (Burno), along with assistants Jeff Sloman (Slo), Gary Kopolow (Kop), Steve Weinstein and Mike Frank (Moke). Quarterback Alan Rubin had one of the finest performances of any NB QB ever, hitting targets like Benny Rok, Bill Hines and Rocky Stein. The defense was stellar, and would hereafter be known by its new found nickname, "Perfect". Mike Cook, Sergio Rok, Joe Mano, and Enrique Hersman led the way. Academically, Pilam won the I.F.C. award in 1979 for Highest Scholarship Achievement. Big Bounce, our annual fund raiser, was the largest fund raising event on campus by a fraternity, raising over $6,500, Pilam finished the year in second place for the President's Cup. Pilam won track for the third time in a row, paced by speedster Gary Kopolow, who captured the 100 yard dash for the third straight time. Pilam finished first in bowling, but was upset by the Delts in racquetball, finishing second. We finished 4 -1 in soccer, losing in the bracket championship. At the time the Pearl went to press, softball, golf, tennis and swimming remained. During the spring of the previous year (1978), Pilam was neck and neck with the Delts (Delta Tau Delta). We won tennis. That left softball to decide who would win the Cup. We won our bracket, with a record of 3 -1, winning playoff games against Alpha Epsilon Pie and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The Delts entered the game undefeated. We beat the Delts, winning the championship game 5 -1. In the social scene, Pilam was famous for Friday afternoon happy hours. We had our first Winter Formal. Pearl Weekend was held in Clearwater. The Best Senior Brothers were Gary Kopolow and Tim Kett. Jeff Sloman was Best Senior Athelete and Marshall Cohen was Best Freshman Brother. The Rex was Greg Ullman, Archons were Mitch Yeckes and Craig Van Duren, KOE was Jeff Richman, Scribes were Eric Fregger and Mike Baron, Pledgemasters were Keith Proctor and Ed Crowder, Marshalls were Murray Price and Jon Wilson, Chaplains were Rueben Moss and Mike Weiss. Pilam had 175 active brothers and 41 little sisters. The pictures and information compiled here were primarily taken from the 25th volume of The Pearl. The editors that year were Arnie Cohen and David Swartz. All in all, 1979-1980 was a very good year. |
